The Leopard awarded for Best Crime Novel of the Year | 23 February 2010
Jo Nesbø, and his new novel The Leopard, has won the Palle Rosenkrantz Prize 2009 for Best Crime Novel of the Year. The Palle Rosenkrantz Prize is the finest crime writing award in Denmark, and is awarded by The Danish Academy of Crime Writers.
According to The Danish Academy of Crime Writers, “Jo Nesbø has, with the anarchistic and alcoholic Harry Hole, revitalized the classic Chandler-esque investigator, who with self-destructive honesty gets in with the ladies and out with nearly everyone else. Especially serial killers and superiors. The Leopard is the latest example of Jo Nesbø’s exceptionally skillful and persistent writing.”

Klas Östergren awarded with The Sixten Heyman Award | 23 February 2010
The Sixten Heyman Award, presented by Gothenburg University, is awarded to a literary writer once every six years. Earlier recipients include Eyvind Johnson, Sven Delblanc and Kerstin Ekman.

“For an authorship that maintains and revitalizes the great realistic narrative tradition in Swedish literature. In Östergren’s novels, sophisticated technique is combined with burlesque storytelling and winding intrigue construction. In the key novel-suite Gentlemen (1980), Gangsters (2005) and The Last Cigarette (2009), the reader is presented with advanced meta-fiction as well as effective societal satire, at the same time as the insignificant individual’s contradictory everyday existence is placed in a larger, almost mythical context. With humor and clear-sighted elegance, Östergren captures late modernity’s conditions and consequences for art and for life.”

Jo Nesbo takes up fight against illiteracy | 03 June 2008
Internationally bestselling writer Jo Nesbo has announced that he will donate all proceeds from his new book, entitled Headhunters (published June 2nd, 2008), to the battle against illiteracy among children.

All proceeds from the sales of the book in book stores, book clubs, mass market editions, audio books and potential film and theatrical rights, in Norway as well as abroad, will go to a recently created foundation, reports Nesbo to Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet.

The foundation will be named The Harry Hole Foundation, after the protagonist of Nesbo’s crime novels.

- The prerequisite is that the money benefit children who are in a situation where they are not taught how to read and write. This implies that the funds will go to countries with a high percentage of illiteracy, says Nesbo.

Nesbo motivates the initiative by the fact that he personally does not need more money, adding that combating illiteracy is key to the democratization of third world countries.

According to Nesbo’s publisher, the first donation will amount to about €830 000, as the book has sold in 120 000 copies so far (in only a couple of days). To this amount shall be added all future sales of the novel, including revenues from the sales of the mass market edition and revenues from the sales of the foreign rights to the book.
